چکیده

In these days of war, both from the battle areas and from accidents in war industries, injuries to the eye are common. In war injuries, the foreign bodies include splinters from glass, bombs, shells, handgrenades and booby-traps, whereas in industrial accidents, they are mostly flying particles of iron, brass, copper and stone. With the exception of ordinary glass and stone, most of these foreign bodies cast shadows on x-ray films. It should however be realized that all intra-ocular foreign bodies are not magnetic. The fragments of shells and bombs are generally magnetic, but often in low degree. Those of hand grenades, booby-traps and land mines are composed of alloys with either a low magnetic value or none at all. It is therefore important to place the magnetic terminal as near to the foreign body as possible. Glass, lead, copper and brass are non-magnetic, and will have to be extracted with a forceps which is usually a very difficult procedure, and may not be possible. In treating a case of intra-ocular injury, it is essential to ascertain the presence and exact location of the foreign body, and so the case should be sent at once to an eye hospital. First aid at the time of the accident should be concentrated on the prevention of sepsis in the eye. This can be done by carefully cleaning up the surroundings of the eve, by the instillation of atropine 1 per cent to dilate the pupil, and of
